The district today enjoys pretty good connectivity with rest of India via railway, whereas increasing number of auto rickshaws are pretty successfully addressing the problem of local transportation. Below is more detailed information about existing transportation infrastructure and also some potential solutions to improve it further.
Railways in DamohDamoh Railway Station (Station code DMO), located in headquarter city of Damoh, is the most important station of the district. Although it does not enjoy the status of ‘Junction’, but it enjoys pretty good connectivity. In fact not only is it connected to all the important cities of Madhya Pradesh, but also to many of the important cities residing outside Madhya Pradesh. Some of the important cities residing outside Madhya Pradesh that Damoh station is directly connected to is as follows: Delhi, Jammu, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Kolkata, Udaipur, Puri and few other important cities. All these cities are economic focal point of modern India and therefore for Damoh direct connectivity to these cities holds huge prospect for economic boost in coming decades. But more than economic potential, Damoh Railway Station is lifeline for ordinary commuters.
Air connectivity to DamohIt has already been mentioned in above paragraph that Damoh doesn’t have an airport. The nearest airport to Domah is Khajuraho Airport located in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The distance between Domah and Khajuraho is approximately 171.8 km, which can be covered roughly via 4 hours of road journey. Another viable option is Raja Bhoj Airport located in capital city of Bhopal. Although it is located some 260 kms away from Damoh, but it offers more direct flights to metropolitan cities than Khajuraho Airport. Besides, there are direct train services between Domah and Bhopal, whereas there is no direct train service between Domah and Khajuraho or even Chhatarpur.

This is State Highway no 37, which starts from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh and then passes through Tikamgarh District, Damoh District and ends in Jabalpur District. The total length of this high way is approximately 187 kms. Although a state highway and although total length of this highway is immensely less, but it still holds huge economic importance for Damoh District. As for local roads running within the district is concerned, then as of today local road account for 2549 kms in the district. Here we’ve taken into account only pakka roads or roads that are in good condition.
Local Transportation in DamohUndoubtedly mention of auto rickshaw becomes very obvious whenever there is discussion about any region’s local transportation. Damoh region is also no exception. As here too auto rickshaws hold monopoly in local transportation. They, however, are mainly concentrated in headquarter city of Domah and its adjoining towns and are very sparsely spread across interiors of the district. To compensate for their minimal presence, private vehicles – mostly jeeps – do offer public transportation in the interior villages and towns.
To conclude we can say that Damoh transportation system will receive much needed impetus if it addresses local transportation problem. That is it must not only increase number of auto rickshaws, but also widen their services to small villages and towns. As for connectivity is concerned, then district as such enjoys pretty good connectivity via rail, but it can be further improved if more state highways pass through the district. And lastly, good maintenance of local roads will also provide much needed boon to region’s local transportation.
